"It's the Thought That Counts!"

How many times have you said, “It’s the thought that counts”? If I had a quarter for every time I said it... I couldn’t contain them all.

I spent twenty years going to college. I started going part-time in between missions when I was in the Air Force. Once I got out of the military in 1995, I worked full-time and went to school full-time at night. The years were challenging, and then more challenges arrived. John Lennon said, “Life is what happens while making plans.” I couldn’t agree more. I needed to get creative when it came to stretching a dollar and a meal. The holidays proved to be extra challenging.

About ten years ago, I remember praying about what to do about Christmas gifts for the family. Then all of a sudden to what did my wondering ears did appear... "It’s the Thoughts that Counts!”  So, I wrote a poem, serving as the directions for this soon to be homemade gift.  My husband and I, along with our cute little kids, had fun coming up with wonderful thoughts for our loved ones. When my kids were younger, we would go to the dollar store and get glass vases to cover with glue and collage. We would put our colorful strips of paper with hand written thoughts in the vases. They stuck up like bouncy flowers for our loved ones to receive and read (but just one a day) when the new year began. Our little “It’s the Thought that Counts” art project gift became such a hit, we would get requests for the same gift thereafter. They all laughed and cried and cherished their thoughts. “Don’t buy me anything for Christmas. I want 31 more thoughts this year,” they would say.

As my first post on KristinaSeymour.com, what better a way to share a message with you – that what really matters in life is thoughtfulness, and taking the time to tell our loved ones how much they mean to us.

This year, I had the idea to write a new poem that went along with T’was the Night before Christmas.

Whichever one you decide to share, may you have a beautiful season full of love and laughter and a bright and blessed New Year!

Christmas Version

T’was three weeks before Christmas
And all thru the house
All creatures were stirring
Including a mouse!
All the stockings were hung
By the chimney with care
In the hopes that St. Nicholas
Otherwise known as “Mwwaahh”
Soon would put something there!
Then what to my wondering ears should appear
A miniature whisper…
A thought very clear…
A little old decision
So lively and quick
I knew in a moment
I could pull off St. Nick!
And more rapid than eagles
More thoughts all came
As I shouted, “It’s the thought that counts!”
So more and more I did name!
And so up to the craft store
I quickly flew
To get a cart full of colorful paper
To write out all the wonderful things I
Thought of for you!
Down the isles I went
With a leap and a bound
I was dressed all in sweats
Praying my belly
Did not look too round!
I spoke not a word
But went straight to work
And filled all the strips of paper
With nice thoughts because…
Well, we both know I’m not a jerk!
And laying my finger
Aside my chin
More brilliant thoughts came
And I agreed with a nod.
And then I rose and I wrapped
And yes I exclaimed….
With my heart full of light
“Merry thought reading to you-ALL
and to you-ALL a good night!”

It’s The Thought That Counts
So we thought of some for you
For you to begin to open
In a day or two…

When January first arrives
May you get so excited
And as you read your first thought
May your heart be delighted!

Whatever it is we thought of
Your laugh, your smile
Your wit
Or a memory or moment
That felt like
The Best One Yet…

We pray you are encouraged
Delighted and surprised
We pray you know
And recognize
How much we love
& think of you!

It’s the Thought that Counts!
So we thought of 31 for you!
When the New Year arrives
Begin to read
Just one a Day
And your Happy New Year
Will be well under way!
